UPDATE: Two shot in drive-by shooting on N2 north in Athlone Park

Investigation is still underway, and a case of attempted murder was opened at Amanzimtoti police station.

A CASE of attempted murder was opened at the Amanzimtoti police station after two occupants were shot at during a drive-by shooting, yesterday, March 23.

According to Amanzimtoti police station communications officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, it is alleged that, at about 13:22, the victims, Sandile Mkhize (43) and his passenger, Asanda Zuke (21), were travelling in a white Isuzu double-cab bakkie along the N2 northbound, taking the Dickens Road, Athlone Park off-ramp, when they were fired upon by unknown males.

“The suspects who opened fire on them were travelling in a white Toyota Corolla and a silver old-shape Volkswagen Jetta. As a result, the driver lost control of his vehicle, which landed in a ditch on the left side of the road at a steep angle,” she said.

Van der Spuy said the Toyota sped away after shots were fired, but the Jetta stopped, and four males jumped out.

“They fired more shots at the double cab, jumped back into their vehicle, and sped off. The driver sustained four gunshot wounds on different parts of his body. His passenger sustained lacerations on her face,” said Van der Spuy.

Both victims were transported to hospital in an ambulance for treatment. Van der Spuy said they are awaiting feedback on the driver’s condition.

The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage, and the investigation is ongoing.
