Toti athletes hit the ground running

The Durban International Marathon was also a Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon Qualifier.

THE Amanzimtoti Athletic Club had a busy weekend recently, with some of its members taking part in the Durban International Marathon and others in the Kosmos 3-in-1 in Secunda.

On March 12, 24 members took part in the Durban International Marathon and the 10km race. The day saw about 5 000 athletes line up at their respective starting lines.

The 42.2km race started in Prospecton, with the finish line at People’s Park at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The race was also a Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon Qualifier.

On March 11, two of the club’s members took part in the Kosmos 3-in-1 at Lake Umuzi in Secunda. The unique 73.3km race is broken down into three races on the day. The 42.2km race started at 06:00, then runners lined up again for the 21.1km at 13:00 and again at 17:00 for a 10km race.

Warren Gibson, the club’s captain, finished the race in a time of 06:54:25 and Martinus Beumer in a time of 07:56:21.

“The race was well-organised, with water points along the route. I was aiming to finish the 42.2km in a time of 03:35:00, but managed to get a time of 03:21:35. This is my best marathon time yet,” said Gibson.

He has completed six Kosmos 3-in-1 races so far and has his sights set on completing 10.
