KZN Philharmonic Orchestra performs at local school

The learners were taught about different musical instruments and how they work and were also given a chance to perform with the ensemble.

WINDY Heights Primary School in Malukazi near Isipingo came alive with classical sounds recently when the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra performed and gave music lessons at the school.

The school’s choirmaster, Linda Makhathini, said the learners were taught about different musical instruments and how they work and were also given a chance to perform with the ensemble. He added that it felt good to see learners taking an interest in music and making good use of all the opportunities given to them.

“We have worked together very well over the past years, and our children learn so much from them. Prior to their visits, they usually send us songs that our choir sing with them. This encourages our children to be literate enough to master the lyrics and sing those songs well,” said Makhathini.

The learners were treated to classical songs from different music genres and some melodies from popular movie soundtracks. Over the past few years, the school introduced the teaching of skills, including music, and established a good partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Principal Thembekile Makhanya said the school continuously works hard to find ways of improving music and ensuring that learners participating in this skill receive a quality education.

“We are grateful for this good opportunity. Our learners enjoy music and look forward to the orchestra’s annual visits,” she said.
