Toti runner places second at Buffs Marathon

Despite her injury, Slindile Mngomezulu still managed to do well in this race.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletic Club’s (AAC) Slindile Mngomezulu came second in her age category at the Buffs Marathon held in East London, recently.

Out of six AAC members who took part, she was the only female. Despite a minor hamstring injury, Mngomezulu completed the 42.46km marathon in a time of 03:20:53.

She received a silver medal and cash prize for finishing second in the women aged 40-49 category. On top of that, she received a top-five spot overall in the women’s division.

“The weather conditions were perfect. The race and route were good and well-organised. There were also plenty of water stations along the route. Although I feel like I could have done better because of my injury, I am happy overall. I’d like to thank my running club and Easy Runners, whom I train with,” said Mngomezulu.

Before joining AAC this year, she was part of the Hollywoodbets Athletics Club. Although she has always been into running, she committed to the sport in 2010. Mngomezulu trains five days a week and is currently preparing for the Two Oceans Marathon on April 15.

“I am also running my first Comrades Marathon this year. I used to ask myself, ‘Why would I want to run 90km?’. However, seeing my performance and strength developing over the years makes me believe I can do it. I’m not sure how long it’ll take me to complete, but I’m up for the challenge,” she said.

With passion and commitment to the sport, she is making it her goal to invest more time into the sport in hopes of obtaining sponsorship.

Amanzimtoti Athletic Club’s Liesl Fourie congratulated her on her achievement and said they are proud of all their members who took part in the marathon.
