ETHEKWINI Municipality has confirmed that the dilapidated pre-fabricated unit will be removed from Winklespruit Beach. “We stand informed that the matter is receiving the requested attention,” said Beetge.

In a March article (Beach left to decay), the SUN reported that the unit had attracted homeless people, some of whom were using it to conduct illicit activities which included sex work, drug sales and public drinking. At the time, Beetge said political wrangling in Council had led to budgets not being passed, leading to the relevant department not having funds to remove the unit.

“Following the re-allocation of funding in terms of the adjustment budget approved during the council sitting of February 28, a month later than expected after political shenanigans disrupted two meetings in January, a site meeting was conducted on March 1 with the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department deputy head. A commitment was secured to remove the structure sooner rather than later,” said Beegte.
