Amanzimtoti parkrun receives approval from municipality

The parkrun was cancelled over a month ago because they were still waiting for permission from eThekwini Municipality.

THE Amanzimtoti parkrun has been granted permission from the land owners, eThekwini Municipality, and the event was able to recommence as usual on Saturday, March 4.

The event was cancelled for over a month while waiting for approval. Run director Kirk Holdsworth said, “It is great to have the parkrun back up and running. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this free event. In particular, as we are celebrating International Women’s Day this week, we would like to extend the invitation to all women. Don’t forget to bring your barcode.”

He extended thanks to Amanzimtoti beach manager Jace Govender and Ward 97 councillor André Beetge for all the help in getting the relevant approvals.

One person who was most excited about the reopening of the parkrun was Amanzimtoti Athletic Club’s Fiona Bernardo, who was finally able to run her 100th parkrun.

To usher in her milestone, her two grandchildren, Amelia (4) and Benjamin Roux (3), patiently waited for her a few metres before the finish line, to take her hand and complete the run.

“I’ve been waiting in anticipation, so it feels awesome to be back and to accomplish this with them by my side,” said Bernardo.

The parkrun is a 5km free community event where you can walk, jog or run every Saturday morning at Amanzimtoti Main Beach.
