St Winifred’s patrollers rescue snake from resident’s house

The mamba was caught and safely released in the bush where it cannot cause harm or be harmed.

ST Winifred’s Community Police Sub-forum’s patrollers went above and beyond what they signed up for when they rescued a green mamba from a resident’s house.

The sub-forum’s public relations officer, Marilize Stins, said they recently received a WhatsApp message from a mother with a little one in distress as there was a snake hanging on her safety gate.

“Our patrol leader, Robert Phorie, was in the area and decided to respond, together with the chairperson, Stefan Stins. Yes, it might not be an emergency for some, but neighbours are there for each other. An emergency does not necessarily mean intruders or medical, but also something life-threatening, such as a bite from a venomous snake,” she said.

Marelize said that a while later and with luck, the mamba was caught and safely released in the bush where it cannot cause harm or be harmed.

She encourages everyone in the area to join their neighbourhood watch/sub-forum, even if they are not able to patrol. “All our patrollers are an asset to our community, and they are all dedicated. We have a lot of patrollers that go above and beyond what they signed up for, and they are always ready to assist no matter what – from keeping the area safe to cutting trees, helping with a broken-down car or putting out fires, and yes, catching snakes,” said Marelize.

They also thank Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum, ET Rapid Response, Blue Security, SAPS and Metro Police, Toti First Responders and KZN Advanced Accident Warning for always assisting when needed.
