Doonside jewellery thief warning

This thief is believed to be part of a syndicate that targets people at their homes under the pretence of being jewellery buyers.

THE Community Crime Prevention Amanzimtoti (CCPO) has issued a warning after recent incidents where people were robbed of their jewellery at their homes. The CCPO’s George Snodey asked those contemplating selling anything to be careful who they dealt with.

“We have had two incidents in the last two weeks where people have had these incidents while dealing with people they don’t know. On February 27, a man that was selling toilet paper managed to convince a Doonside woman to show him her jewellery as he also apparently purchased jewellery. When she took it out to show him, he grabbed it and ran away,” said Snodey.

He said the man is part of a group that hawks various items, including toilet paper, dishcloths and pots and will use that ploy to get into a property.

In late 2021, an elderly woman in Amanzimtoti alerted the SUN that she had been scammed by a man of her jewellery. She said she had been outside watering flowers at her block of flats when a man who was selling some wares approached her and asked for water. After drinking the water, the man allegedly told her he buys jewellery and ended up making off with her gold rings, necklaces, brooches, and earrings.
