According to an eye witness who provided the photographs, the incident happened in the peri-urban area not far from Old Main Road. The man had apparently climbed up an electricity pole where he came into contact with the cables at the very top.

“No one seems to know who he is, but there were some tools on the ground under him that look like they fell from him as he was electrocuted,” said Mavika Shabane from Malagazi.

It is also not known whether he had accomplices or who they are. Emergency services arrived at the scene and pronounced him dead.
eThekwini Municipality has been plagued by cable theft which has become intense because of load-shedding.
eThekwini spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela asked residents to treat all electricity cables as live even during load-shedding.
