VIDEO: Hospital without water for days

Some of the patients have been queueing for water, and others have been transferred to other hospitals.

SOME residents of Amanzimtoti have heeded the call to assist after Umlazi’s Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital has gone without water since Thursday, February 2. The hospital serves Amanzimtoti and parts of Umlazi.

The shortage came after a 300mm water pipe on the South Coast Bridge over the Umlaas Canal burst on February 2. Since then, the hospital has relied on water tankers and donated water, and patients have been seen queueing at all hours for water.

Ward 97 councillor and eThekwini Municipality’s executive council member, André Beetge, said while technicians were on site working to fix the breakage, some of the patients have been transferred to other hospitals.

In Amanzimtoti, calls were made on various Facebook groups, and water was collected to be delivered to the hospital. The Wanderers Haven charity shop in the CBD is also a drop-off point for anyone who wishes to donate.
