The suspects made their first appearance on January 17, and their case was postponed to February 1 for bail application. On February 1, the bail application was postponed to February 10. Provincial National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisoon-Kara, said two of the men have chosen to remain behind bars and not apply for bail.

Brijmohan (46) was shot and killed by unknown men at his construction site at 55 Cato Crescent in Amanzimtoti on October 21, 2022. A surveillance video of the incident, which was shared on social media, showed two men walking up to Brijmohan as he supervised work and then shooting him at point-blank range.

Community activist, Raymond Sakloo, who was part of the people who were picketing at the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court during the suspects’ previous court appearance on February 1, said the community wants the suspects to be denied bail.

“We would like to thank the National Specialised Unit for arresting the perpetrators responsible for this murder. We call for the Kwazulu-Natal police commissioner and the Isipingo police station’s detective unit to also arrest the perpetrators responsible for the murder of Duane Balkrishna and Vinesh Lewis, also from the Isipingo area. We are calling on residents, friends and family to join us at the Umlazi court and demand Justice for Sunil,” said Sakloo.

The NPA has not released the names of the suspects.
