Tap water is safe to drink – eThekwini Municipality

The municipality stresses that the rumours that the drinking water is unsafe are false and released a statement assuring that Umgeni Water’s water-treatment processes are both rigorous and thorough.

AS more people complain on social media that tap water is making them sick, the eThekwini Municipality has said the water it supplies is 100% safe to drink.

Ethekwini’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said people should refrain from spreading wrong information about the city’s water.

“The City has become aware of false reports circulating on social media claiming our water is contaminated. The City would like to state categorically that our water is clean, and the public must ignore the disinformation promulgated in this regard,” said Mayisela.

Umgeni water also released a statement assuring the public that the water it supplies meets the quality stipulated in South African National Standards 241 (SANS 241) for drinking-water quality.

“Umgeni Water’s water-treatment processes are both rigorous and thorough. Advanced and sophisticated treatment technologies and chemicals are used to treat raw water to ensure safe drinking water is produced,” the statement said.
