After the April floods, Gift of the Givers received a R6m donation from the PepsiCo Foundation and it has used those funds to distribute food and other aid to those affected and to also lend a helping hand to other struggling communities. Gift of the Givers is a non-governmental organisation and disaster relief group.

Bilall Jeewa, who is the organisation’s community liaison officer, said the reason they chose Malukazi was that the area’s residents are poor and destitute, with high levels of employment. “Also, PepsiCo Foundation’s lead in Sub–Saharan Africa, Devendri Adari, is originally from the area, so we thought it would be good to return to her roots and help out,” he said.

In his speech, Gift of the Givers’ founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman stressed the importance of instilling old values of discipline and religion into the youth for a prosperous future in South Africa.
“It is our job to build a nation that will look after this country and raise kids who will be sincere and honest,” said Bilall Jeew Sooliman. He added that he wished to see different communities working together in unity to create prosperity.
