WITH the festive season and the promise of bonus payouts, criminals are also eager to get spending.
SAPS has cautioned residents about ATM scams, which have left many facing a miserable Christmas period. Be aware and alert to safeguard your hard-earned cash.

Here is one of the ways in which criminals will attempt to scam you:
In some cases, criminals stand in the ATM queue and pretend to be withdraw money. They leave a receipt hanging from the printer slot. While a target is entering their PIN code, the criminal will then approach and ask to take their slip. When the victim is distracted, the criminal cancels the transaction and switches the bank card. Often money is withdrawn before the victim even realises the bank card is not theirs.
Old people are frequently targeted. The criminals approach and offer assistance at the ATM, then eject the bank card and flee. Sometimes fake machine pads and card slots are placed on top of the original ATM setup, which captures your PIN code and clones your card details.
ATM do’s and dont’s
- Do not allow anyone to distract you while busy at the ATM.
- Do allow anyone to assist you with a transaction, even if you are uncertain.
- If you suspect someone is attempting to swap your card or learn your PIN code, shout for help to people nearby.
- Always have your bank’s emergency/ card stop number stored on your cell phone. If you suspect a criminal has stolen your details, call the number immediately and request the card be frozen.
