Residents clean up after uncouth revellers in Athlone Park

Community members worked together to clean up litter and beer bottles at Fairway Road park on the Sunday after the party.

ON DECEMBER 4, Athlone Park residents woke up to a nasty scene at Fairway Road park after a party the previous night left the area with heaps of rubbish.

After seeing the mess, the residents did not wait for the municipality, but they rolled up their sleeves and picked up the litter. One of the residents, Mandi Pech, said as they went to the park to enjoy the Sunday morning, they were greeted by a ghastly sight of beer bottles and other party leftovers.

“The community put out a message to all groups, and some of us met at 12:00 on Sunday to do the clean-up,” said Mandi.

Over the past year, the residents have been proactive in making Fairway Road park a family-friendly place with some amenities that can be used by everyone. A braai area with benches was created, and an outdoor gym was installed at the beginning of the year.
