Amahle has been actively promoting entrepreneurship at his school.

A LEARNER from Hamilton Makhanya Secondary School in Umbumbulu is over the moon after the national minister of the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) paid him a special visit at his school on October 25.

Grade 11 learner Amahle Mjoli has a strong interest in entrepreneurship, media and digital technology. He started his business venture where he stocked sunglasses and resold them. He and fellow learners, who are entrepreneurs, started an organisation called High School Entrepreneurs SA (HSESA) which teaches learners about running a business. He also started an online magazine.

In April, Amahle came across DSBD’s minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams’ cellphone number, and he decided to send her a WhatsApp message, telling her what he was doing to promote entrepreneurship at his school. He also asked Ndabeni-Abrahams to come to his school to talk to his schoolmates and give them tips on how to start successful businesses.

“I wasn’t expecting a reply, but I received one the next day from her personal assistant, and I just couldn’t believe it. She promised to give us support, and on Tuesday, she just showed up at our school,” said Amahle.

He further thanked his school’s teaching staff and non-teaching staff, as well as Ndabeni-Abrahams and her assistant, Nyameka Mtirira, for the encouragement and support they have given him.

Last year, Amahle represented the province in the National Heritage Education Schools Project Competition held in Limpopo.

Ndabeni-Abrahams said Amahle was a great example as he gets things started and did not just sit and wait. She presented Amahle with a laptop to help him do his work.
