After the elderly’s appeal in the South Coast Sun’s October 28 edition – elders need the wool to knit Christmas toys – they were inundated with phone calls from people who had been eager to give away their extra wool.

“So far, they have collected about three black bags full. The elders have reached their 100-doll target, and with all the wool, they plan to keep going.”

The home’s manager, Megan Kuit, said they were really surprised by the response from the community. “We had previously posted an appeal online and received little to no response. It’s such a blessing to see how the community has come together to support each other, especially the older community,” she said.

Lorraine Kurten, a resident at the home, said she was excited to receive colourful wool, as her imagination can run wild and she is able to be more creative.

“This charity project was started to give to Usizo Lomndeni, a charity organisation that feeds about 500 children daily,” she said.

They thank the community for all the support and encourage other retirement homes and individuals to knit, to ensure every child can receive a gift for Christmas. They also welcome donations of buttons, white stuffing and small bells.

Donations can be dropped off at their premises on 21 Riverside Road, Amanzimtoti. Pick-up can also be arranged. For more information, contact 072 277 6673.
