The non-profit company, established in February, has started the charity project to give to Usizo Lomndeni. The charity organisation feeds hundreds of children daily.

“The organisation often helps us by donating fresh vegetables, so we decided to give back to them, and gift the children for Christmas,” said the retirement home’s owner, Hannelie Johnston.

For Christmas this year, they are aiming to knit and crochet 100 dolls. Within two weeks, they made 60 dolls, however, with a tight budget and a low wool stock, they are asking the community for assistance.”

The residents would love to receive colourful wool, in order to make colourful dolls. “The more colours, the more creative we can be. So far, we’ve only made dolls, but we’re looking at making some animals, too,” said resident Lorraine Kurten.

The retirement home’s manager, Megan Kuit, said that not only does the project give less fortunate children gifts, but it also gets all the seniors socially involved.”

“They’re excited to wake up every day. We’ve started a bit of a knitting club, which is so important for all to feel included as a lot of older people sometimes seclude themselves. In doing that, we’ve created a small community where people can just come and be themselves, and be creative,” said Megan.

Donations of wool can be dropped off at their premises on 21 Riverside Road, Amanzimtoti. Pick-up can also be arranged. For more information, contact 072 277 6673.
