The nomination into different portfolios was open to all ward 97 residents whose names appear in the most recent voters roll, and also meet other criteria set out before the elections.

At 10:00, which was the cut off time for registration, ward 97 councillor, André Beetge, said a quorum of 100 community members in attendance had not been reached, causing a decision to be made to extend registration to 12:00. After more residents arrived, the nomination and election process kicked off and was concluded when all open portfolio spots were filled.

“Congratulations to those elected. We will introduce the committee to the community once we receive notice they have been verified by the municipality as meeting the regulation criteria. A word of appreciation to those who attended and remained throughout the nomination and election procedure,” said Beetge.

After being elected into the ward committee, each elected individual is allocated a portfolio.

“Each portfolio member to identify 10 residents, who also align with the ejection criteria as required for ward committee members, from the different areas or suburbs of the ward, to form part of their portfolio sub-committee,” said Beetge.

Elected ward committee members to meet with councillor as chair once a month to discuss residents’ concerns with necessary recommendations or course of action. The committee has to be representative of all areas of the ward.
