Snare Aware head back to Karridene greenbelt

Poachers are still setting traps in the Karridene greenbelt, and the Snare Aware team suspects two different poachers due to slight differences in the way the snares are set.

SNARE Aware continued their game of cat and mouse with the poacher/s in the Karridene greenbelt recently, by removing another six snares from the area.

“It was only a few weeks ago that we were last here, and these six snares were all found in areas previously checked, and found to be free of snares at that time. So this active poacher continues to set these cruel traps for our wildlife,” said a member whose identity cannot be disclosed due to safety concerns.

The member added that they actually suspect two different poachers because of the slight differences in the setting of their snares, with each poacher having their own ‘signature’ way of setting them.

“The two hotspot areas are still popular for laying these traps and have obviously been very productive for these poachers over time. So they continue to set the snares in these areas even though we are showing our presence and removing them,” said the member.

The team said they will spend time searching all around for signs of movement and snares being set throughout the whole greenbelt. This is one of their favourite natural areas, and they are desperate to protect the wildlife that still lives in there. “Another six lives saved this weekend. We will be back. Soon,” said the member.
