Tidy Towners clean up Warner Beach

The community-driven project collected over 400 bags of rubbish from a stretch of about 100 metres.

SUPPORTERS of Tidy Towns Amanzimtoti recently rallied together for Phase 2 of the clean-up in Warner Beach near the train station recently.

Co-ordinator Michelle Dunnett said there were even more people than at the previous clean-up which did not surprise her because the locals are fiercely proud and passionate. Tidy Towners focused on the area close to the train station.

“We realised after the last clean-up that it takes longer than you think, so we did a smaller area. The amount of litter removed was incredible,” said Dunnett.

Over 400 bags of rubbish were removed from a stretch of about 100 metres. “People are becoming more enthusiastic and motivated. It was incredible to witness young children with blowing machines and elderly men with chainsaws giving everything they’ve got.”

“There were some exhausted bodies but with huge smiling faces. More than one person commented on how surprised they were with the ‘feel-good factor’ they experienced. I have a friend who came reluctantly and only out of loyalty to me, but she loved every second of it, and now I am sure she’ll be back. She couldn’t get over how great she felt just by filling four bags of litter,” said Dunnett.

She thanked Pam Golding for the water, their time and financial contribution, Nico’s Garden Services for taking the 400 bags of refuse to the dump, Seadoone BP for the 2 000 bags, KZN Mowers’ donation of a petrol blower, Toscant Agencies for 10 brooms and 10 rakes, Seabreeze Hardware for loaning their brush cutter, Seeff for their help and monthly donation of R500, as well as everyone else who made the day a success.

Dunnett said they are desperately looking for a bin sponsorship – plastic or concrete. “As a completely community-driven project, our success is reliant on donations from the community and local businesses. Please support us by paying a monthly fee,” she said.
