The man from Folweni appeared in court the following day. According to the victim, whose name is known to the SUN, she was about to make a cash deposit at an ATM when she was approached by two men who were asking for change.

“One of them had R800 in four R200 bank notes in his hand, and they asked that I give them the R100 bank notes as they wanted to buy something and the store had no change. I took the R800 in R200 bank notes, and I gave them the same amount in R100 bank notes that I was about to deposit,” said the complainant.

As she proceeded to make the deposit, the ATM rejected the four R200 bank notes she had allegedly taken from the men, causing her to raise alarm immediately as she realised she had been scammed. The men were still in the vicinity, and she was able to point them out to the security guards who proceeded to apprehend them, but one of them was able to get away.

The SUN arrived as he was handed over to the police. He was remanded in custody while the investigations continue.

In a statement, the SAPS asked people to be alert at all times while using an ATM and never allow themselves to be distracted. “If you need help, ask a bank official,” said the statement.
