The facility is expected to offer a much-needed service to victims of gender-based violence in KwaMakhutha.

A victim-friendly trauma room was unveiled at the KwaMakhutha police station on Tuesday, August 30.

The unveiling was part of a programme by SAPS, the KZN Department of Community Safety and Liaison, and various stakeholders to address gender-based violence in KwaMakhutha. The purpose of a trauma room is to provide the victim of a sexual assault or of gender-based violence a place of calm, where they can sit and talk to a helpful police officer about the incident they have experienced.

The facility has been operational for a while, and it is run by Operation Bobbi Bear, Life Line, as well as other non-profit organisations. Speaking during an oversight visit to the area earlier in August, Member of Parliament Tim Brauteseth called the trauma room a beacon of hope as it offers a valuable service to the community.
