DeafBlind SA to host communication workshop in Toti

The Orientation and communication with DeafBlind Persons workshop will assist individuals in better communicating with those who have a dual-sensory impairment.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Branch of DeafBlind South Africa will be hosting an ‘Orientation and Communication with DeafBlind Persons’ Workshop from September 19 to 23 at the Amanzimtoti Methodist Church.

This unique workshop will be most beneficial to deafblind people or individuals who interact and communicate with deafblind people, for example, volunteers, educators, primary healthcare workers, hospital personnel and social workers from various social development organisations.

Communications officer Roxanne Peters said, “Deafblindness is a combination of sight and hearing loss that results in difficulties with communication, access to information and mobility. It is also categorised as a dual-sensory impairment, dual-sensory loss and multi-sensory impairment.”

The course commences with insights into the types of interpreting, followed by instruction on the South African sign language alphabet which forms the foundation of most signs that delegates will be taught in the five-day workshop.

“Fingerspelling production and reception, how to guide a deafblind person, protocols and etiquette, everyday mobility and social situations are highlights of the interactive course content that delegates will be guided through by the consummate professional in sign language, Ronel Maree,” said Peters.

DeafBlind SA-KZN are offering this workshop to interested individuals at R950 per person, inclusive of refreshments, light lunches daily and a certificate upon completion.
