In a video that circulated widely on social media, the employee was caught by the community who allegedly witnessed him and his accomplices cutting and loading electricity cables in a marked eThekwini vehicle from the Department of Water and Sanitation. After catching him, he was given a heavy beating by community members before he was handed over to the police.

The person narrating the video in isiZulu can be heard saying the alleged culprit pays unemployed young men from Felekisi and Lovu township to steal cables on his behalf, which he then collects using his employer’s car.

Stolen cables found in a municipal vehicle.

Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana confirmed that the man is employed in the Water and Sanitation Department and that he has been suspended, pending an investigation.

“The employee has been charged internally with a case of Municipal Property Theft and Unauthorised Use of a Municipal Vehicle. The employee was not on official duty when he was caught in possession of the electricity cables,” said Sisilana.

She also confirmed that a case was opened with the police.
