ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY PUBLIC NOTICE

APPLICATION TO THE DEPT. OF FORESTRY, FISHERIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT, FOR THE COASTAL WATERS DISCHARGE PERMIT FOR AMANZIMTOTI WASTEWATER TREATMENT WORKS IN TERMS OF SECTION 69 OF THE INTEGRATED COASTAL MANAGEMENT ACT, (ACT NO. 24 OF 2008)

Notice is hereby given in terms of Section 69 of the Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) Act (Act No. 24 of 2008); the eThekwini Municipality is submitting an application to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) for a Coastal Waters Discharge Permit (CWDP) for the Amanzimtoti Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW).
Amanzimtoti WWTW is an existing 30ML per day activated sludge plant located in the Southern Coastal Area. Wastewater flow into the plant is regulated via a balancing tank and then screened and degritted. The treatment facility is then split into two, each side consisting of primary settling, an activated sludge process and secondary settling. The secondary effluent is disinfected in two contact chambers before being discharged into the Mbokdweni River. Waste Activated Sludge is thickened via two DAF units before undergoing primary digestion. Raw sludge from the PST’s undergoes primary and secondary digestion. Digested sludge is then tankered off-site.
