PROBUS and Khanya Hospice hosted a well-attended Cancer Talk for October at the Amanzimtoti Bowling Club on October 4.

The talk was aimed at creating cancer awareness and educating members about services provided by Khanya Hospice. There was also a testimony by cancer survivor Hettie van Niekerk, who told those gathered about her experience with the disease and her journey of healing.

Khanya Hospice’s CEO, Neil McDonald, explained what the non-profit organisation does in assisting those who need palliative care.

“We reach everywhere and help people suffering from cancer, HIV and TB from all areas from Amanzimtoti to Hibberdene. Some even suffer from dementia and strokes. We assist with walkers, cushions, bed sheets made for people with bed sores and wheelchairs,” said McDonald.

He said his wish is to have a step-down facility for patients on the South Coast. A step-down facility offers a healthcare environment for patients who no longer require acute care but still need specialised medical attention.

“I’ve been promoting it since I arrived on the South Coast,” he said.

He added that there is space for such a facility and plans have been drawn, but the only drawback is funding. The cost to build one is R15 million. Unless donors come on board, this plan will not be realised and building costs will continue to rise.

Members enjoyed a braai afterwards. For more information, to donate or to support Khanya Hospice, contact McDonald on 083 597 8985 or at hospice@khanyahospice.co.za
