The area from Tshehlophe to Mdumezulu, as well as Folweni, has been plagued by power interruptions as a result of the system being overloaded.

In a statement, eThekwini said the new equipment is advanced and it is designed to detect and isolate faults effectively.

“This is a function that is set to significantly reduce repair times and improve overall service reliability,” it said.

eThekwini said the main reason for the interruptions is the overloading of the electrical network as well as the illegal connections, which deprive the city and Eskom of revenue.

In the 2022/23 financial year, Eskom said it experienced non-technical losses of around R5 billion due to illegal connections, meter bypasses and other electricity-related criminal activities.
