KCFW social worker Sandra Govender said women need to be educated about social justice, equality and accessibility to services.

“Many women are unaware of their rights, and this programme was to assist women from all sectors of life to know their rights and be empowered to utilise resources available to them. KCFW and ATU’s mandate is to strengthen, advocate for and empower victims of gender-based violence and domestic violence, especially women,” said Govender.

She decried the fact that although we live in a democratic nation, there is still a continuous barrier preventing women from having equal access to opportunities and decision-making authority.

“Women worldwide have fewer chances than men to participate in the economy and to hold political office although gender equality is a human right,” she said.

Senior Attorney Karren Britz from Meumann White Attorneys educated the gathered women on how to file for a will, how to get legal assistance through Legal Aid and Pro Bono if you are unemployed, and the types of marriages recognised under South African law. Britz said it is important to educate women on the law and the various processes and channels that are designed to protect them.

“We were thrilled to be allowed to empower women and shed some light on the importance of proper estate planning and how to safeguard themselves from possible complications. It was an amazing initiative on an often overlooked subject, and we are so excited about future collaborations that empower our people,” said Britz.

Govender said the initiative was a success and was confident that it will make an impact in the lives of the women who attended.
