Surveillance camera project sees positive results

These cameras are not only a visual deterrent to criminals but also assists in the apprehension of criminals.

THE Toti Central Community Police Sub-Forum has seen a decrease in crime since it began its surveillance camera project a year ago.

One of its most recent dome cameras was installed at the intersection of Sherwood Crescent and Viden and Marian roads with the help of Mathew Morton. He took the initiative to rally his neighbours and secure the funds for the cameras because he knew the spot was a high-foot-traffic zone.

Dane de Klerk, the sub-forum’s chairperson, said the cameras do not replace security companies but serve to support them and the police by being their eyes and ears.

“Not only do the cameras act as a deterrent, but residents and security companies can access and monitor footage at any time of the day. This has helped prevent crimes as well as apprehend suspects. We currently only have 20 camera patrollers and 25 foot patrollers, with the potential to have many more,” he said, adding that the cameras can also be a buy-in factor for when people are looking for safer neighbourhoods to move to.

Eugene Engelbrecht from ET Rapid Response noted that the cameras’ strategic placement and high resolution enable residents to provide detailed descriptions of individuals or vehicles, which makes it easier and quicker for them to locate the suspect/s.

De Klerk extended thanks to pastor Andre du Plooy of the Amanzimtoti Methodist Church for sponsoring the electricity and Wi-Fi and ET Rapid Response for their quick and efficient installation work.

Additional community funding has also allowed for cameras to be installed at the corner of Kingsway and Valley View roads. The sub-forum now has eight domes installed, each with three or four cameras.

The sub-forum covers the area from Isundu Drive to School Road, down to Rock View Road, and up to Wanda Cele Road, connecting to Seadoone Road.
