Makhanya (64) had finished bathing in an outside bathroom that evening with his wife and was walking to the main house when unknown men approached him and shot him multiple times. His wife who was still in the bathroom was unharmed.

A karate and fitness fanatic, Makhanya retired as a training officer in the police force, travelling to various police centres to improve officers’ physical fitness levels. Njabulo Madlala of the Durban Karate School said he and Makhanya had practised karate for 35 years, and in those years, he had known him to be a strict, disciplined and dedicated person.

“His disciplinarian nature probably had been influenced by the combination of his traditional Zulu background and old-school police-force grooming. He was upright, stern and always wanted things done by the book,” said Madlala.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiwe Ngcobo said a case of murder was opened at Umbumbulu Police Station, and it is under investigation. He was laid to rest at his home on August 24.
