FIRST-TIME entrant, Debbie Nel from Amanzimtoti, is one of the top 10 finalists in the 32nd annual Championship Boerewors competition.
Shoprite and Checkers invited chefs, cooks and boerewors aficionados to enter their finest recipes.

Participants were expected to demonstrate proficiency in the entire boerewors crafting process – from putting together the tastiest combination of herbs and spices, to processing the meat and producing perfectly stuffed and cooked boerewors.
After impressing an expert panel of judges from the South African Chefs’ Association over multiple rounds, Nel will now join nine other contestants at the grand finale in Cape Town on August 24.
Here they will prepare and cook their boerewors for judges Zanele van Zyl, Carmen Niehaus, James Khoza, Matthew Howcroft and Martin Kobald.
The winner will be declared on the day and will take home incredible prizes, including a brand-new Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD RB AT and the coveted title of 2024 Boerewors Champion.
“If I win, my first dream is to book and pay for my driver’s licence and my second dream is to donate to those in need, particularly the Domino Foundation where I volunteer,” said Nel.
The winning recipe will also be for sale in Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide from September 6.
