‘Trailer syndicate’ nabbed in Doonside

The suspects were wanted on a similar case in Umbilo where they also used fraudulent documents and false number plates to commit crime.

THREE men were arrested for trying to hire a trailer from a Doonside business using fraudulent documents recently.

The Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) said the men likely belonged to a trailer-theft syndicate.

In a statement, the CCPO said the suspects came to a trailer-hiring business on Rockview Road and indicated their intention to hire a trailer.

“While doing the necessary paperwork, it was established that the documents they were using appeared to be fraudulent, and these were the same suspects and vehicle that were wanted on a (similar) Umbilo case,” read the statement.

When the men realised they had been caught out, they attempted to flee, but their vehicle was immobilised.

“Two suspects were stopped in the vehicle, and one fled on foot. After a lengthy foot chase, he was also apprehended near Chain Rocks Beach,” it said.

After CCPO, ET Rapid Response and Amanzimtoti Police responded, they noticed that the suspects’ vehicle was fitted with suspected false plates and a false licence disc. The identity documents, as well as the false plates used in the Umbilo case, were recovered in the vehicle. The three suspects were taken into custody and have appeared in court.
