New moderate-income housing project in Isipingo

Between the two new complexes, 75 low- to moderate-income households will benefit from owning new homes.

TO ADDRESS the critical housing shortage in Isipingo, the eThekwini Municipality is forging ahead with a development aimed at those who earn above the minimum to qualify for a free house but have too little to afford a property in the private open market.

The project’s tender document said the development will ensure that low- to moderate-income households can own homes.

“One of the main challenges to addressing the current housing backlog in eThekwini is the inability to supply housing products that are affordable to most of the population. This affordability problem is largely driven by the high cost of housing and the inability of households to afford the upfront payments,” it said.

Ward 90 councillor Shad Nowbuth said that two complexes are going to be built in Isipingo at 24 and 30 Tangerine Grove in Orient Hills.

“Number 30 Tangerine Grove will have 27 units, and number 24 Tangerine Grove will have 48 units. All are two-bedroom units. Each complex will be six storeys high with lifts and individual parking bays,” said Nowbuth.

According to current calculations, the cost of each unit is R603 245, and to qualify, the applicant should earn between R3 501 and R22 000 per month.

Nowbuth said that tenders have been opened, and the Housing Department will appoint the developer soon. He added that further updates and developments regarding applications will be provided as and when information is received.
