In the first incident, ET Rapid Response’s Tony Lokker said information was received of a courier truck that had been hijacked along the N2 near Winklespruit.

“The suspects drove the hijacked truck to Illovo township where the stock was offloaded into suspects’ vehicles. Our ET Tactical Response Team, SAPS District Trio Tracing team and Winklespruit’s Road Traffic Inspectorate mobilised and managed to intercept two vehicles used by the suspects,” said Lokker.

During this process of interception, Lokker said the suspects opened fire at the officers, who did not hesitate to retaliate.

“Two suspects were arrested, one of whom sustained gunshot wounds. The two vehicles used in the commission of the crime and stock from the truck were recovered. Investigations are currently underway to trace and apprehend any outstanding suspects. Well done to all role-players involved, and we are thankful that no members sustained any injuries during this ordeal,” he said.

In the other incident, a Toyota delivery van was hijacked by armed suspects in the Folweni area during the day on July 30. Lokker said officers received information about suspicious activity on the township’s West Street.

“While checking the hotspots, our members recovered the hijacked Toyota Hilux badly stripped,” he said.

Most cases of courier vehicle hijackings have been reported in Isipingo where after they are hijacked, the vehicles are taken to KwaMakhutha or Umlazi where stock is offloaded.
