From August 5 to 8, metro police and other departments targeted business owners, street traders, illegal roadside mechanics and improper waste disposal. Several businesses were issued with fines for not having proper trading permits, and homeless people were driven out of public toilets that they had turned into drug dens.

Deputy Mayor Zandile Myeni said the purpose of the operation is to curb the alarming spike of reported criminal activities and ensure vehicle roadworthiness and business compliance.

“Illegal roadside mechanics do not only leave our roads with fuel spills, which also block our drainage system, but pose a significant danger to other road users. Repairing vehicles on the side of the road is an offence,” said Myeni.

She added that metro police will continue working with other units to realise the city’s 2030 vision of Africa’s most caring and liveable city.

In a statement, eThekwini’s Communications Unit said the City further urges residents to follow proper waste management practices which include disposing of waste in street litter bins, taking out their refuse on scheduled collection days and avoiding littering and illegal dumping.
