Residents welcome upcoming N2 widening

The upgrades are part of a larger multi-billion-rand project to widen the freeway.

THE upgrades of the N2 between Isipingo interchange and Edwin Swales Drive interchange that the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (Sanral) is about to undertake are part of a 10-year project that started in 2021 to make the highway wider.

These upgrades will include the widening of the road with four or five lanes in each direction and the reconfiguration of most major interchanges. Sanral has previously said the N2 upgrades form part of Sanral’s plan to refurbish and strengthen routes that connect South Africa’s main industrial hubs.

“For companies and residents in the area, this is now bearing fruit in terms of local economic growth and job creation. Our flagship projects are the N2 corridor upgrades, which are expected to take between eight to 10 years to complete and create up to 15 000 job opportunities for construction,” it said in a statement.

Apart from accommodating current traffic demand, the design of the Isipingo interchange will make allowance for future expansion to cope with the anticipated Durban dig-out port.

A meeting to bring the community up to speed about the upgrades was held at the Mobeni Heights Civic Hall on July 29. Residents welcomed the upgrades, saying they will help solve traffic congestion once completed.
