At Nilgiri Crescent in Isipingo Hills, an on-site meeting was held by City officials, contractors and the affected residents who have endured a serious sewage outfall from the neighbouring Kanku Road housing complex for almost a year.

Ward 90 councillor Shad Nowbuth said officials outlined measures to mitigate the problem, and the work is planned to begin soon.

“An inspection was also made of the outfall of raw sewage into Dehaloo Lane on the eastern boundary of the complex. It was agreed by the Human Settlements Department delegation that the raw sewage flowing out of a sewer manhole into Dehaloo Lane is from the housing complex. Immediate action to unblock the manhole will be undertaken and an assessment done to plot a way forward,” said Nowbuth.

A sewage water pump station at the Kanku Road housing complex has not been commissioned since it was completed over a year ago. Nowbuth said an official told him that the contractor never handed it over to eThekwini after completion. He said if the pump station was operational, there would be no outfall issues.

On the same day, a blockage in Orient Hill Primary School, which posed a serious health issue to learners and staff, was cleared to the satisfaction of all concerned.
