Ntombifuthi Dasa started Insikayethu Community Development in 2020 at the height of Covid-19 to help those in need.

“There were a lot of people who needed help at the time as a result of the lockdown. We went door-to-door in our neighbourhood to take stock of the needs, and we realised that many people were going hungry and that a lot defaulted on their chronic medication because they could not afford taxi fare to fetch it from the clinic,” said Dasa.

She decided to start a soup kitchen and also have a central point closer to the community where medication is delivered and patients can fetch it. Sea Harvest came on board and supplied her organisation with food parcels which she distributed to the needy. She also used some of the food to run a soup kitchen from her home. During the 2021 floods, Sea Harvest also delivered blankets which were distributed in the community. The feeding scheme will continue depending on whether she has sourced food.

She has acquired a piece of land where she wants to build a place that can be used to collect medication, as well as for a soup kitchen.

“I’m requesting help with building a structure where we can work. I’d appreciate any type of assistance, whether it’s food for the soup kitchen or building material,” she said.

Dasa can be contacted on 084 584 8925 or 068 210 9036.
