Amanzimtoti cancer support group promotes community, positivity

The cancer support group provides more than just emotional support to patients and survivors. Medical professionals, social workers and motivational speakers often share valuable insights during the meetings.

TERTIA de Wet, a stage 4 metastatic breast cancer fighter, helps others and herself to find strength in community and positivity through her cancer support group.

Through the creation of the Team C Cancer Support Group in Amanzimtoti on July 8, 2023, Tertia and her team have fostered a thriving community of around 80 patients and supporters, which continues to grow.

The letter C in the name embodies a multitude of positive attributes: from caring and coping to compassion and communication to championing and conquering challenges.

“It is through these values that we continue to uplift and inspire our members along their tough journeys. I can relate as I have been on this journey since September 2022, ” she said.

The face-to-face support group is for anyone affected by any type of cancer, to come and openly share fears, triumphs and challenges without judgment, relate to others and build friendships with like-minded people.

Meetings take place every second Saturday of the month. “It often features guest speakers, ranging from medical professionals to social workers and motivational speakers. The meetings offer invaluable insights into various aspects of cancer and survivorship. Discussions cover topics such as treatment options, managing side effects, emotional well-being and navigating life beyond diagnosis,” said Tertia.

Support extends beyond the confines of the meetings. “Our members form lasting bonds that provide continuous support through phone calls, social outings and a WhatsApp chat group. Whether you need advice, a listening ear, or simply someone to share a quiet moment with, our community is here for you,” said Tertia.

She thanked the sponsors who have supported them and helped them with T-shirts, pamphlets, tea, eats and business cards which are distributed to oncologists for their patients.

The next meeting is on August 10 at 10:00, at the Amanzimtoti Methodist Church coffee room. The address is 3 Dingwall Road. All faiths are welcome. For more information, contact Tertia de Wet on 072 856 3949.
