According to Dalene Heath of Toti Community Assist (TCA), Quanu was knocked by a Toyota Tazz at around 17:23 while on his way home at Ocean Call from visiting a friend. Earlier reports had indicated that Quanu had been on his skateboard at the time of the accident.

“Emergency services responded, but there was nothing they could do for the young man. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Heath.

While the car fled the scene of the accident, the driver later handed himself in at the Amanzimtoti Police Station where he was duly charged. Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident and said the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

A releasing of the balloons ceremony was held on July 14 for Quano at Uitsig, which is where he grew up. Heath said a fundraiser has been started to assist Quanu’s parents with costs.

“For our Nelson Mandela Challenge, we are asking our community to open your hearts and contribute R67 towards a memorial service for Quanu,” she said.
