Xaba had widely been tipped to replace Mxolisi Kaunda who was promoted to the National Council of Provinces in Parliament after the recent elections.

Delivering his maiden speech, Xaba promised to work closely with all stakeholders to rid the city of its persistent problems to realise its full potential.

“I don’t take this oath lightly as I know the responsibility bestowed upon me. I will not disappoint the residents,” he said.

As Xaba takes the reigns, eThekwini was recently placed under Section 154 intervention, after the provincial government allowed it to be guided by a team of governance experts to help run it and guide it from near collapse.
