“As the police officers were searching the men, the men turned on the officers and overpowered them. The suspects robbed the police officers of their firearms and the keys of the police vehicle,” he said.

The suspects, who fled in their own vehicle, also fled with the police vehicle. Naicker said police officers in the vicinity were immediately notified of the incident. The suspects were spotted close to where the robbery occurred.

“A chase ensued and the suspects lost control of the police vehicle which then overturned. They abandoned the police vehicle and continued to flee in their own vehicle,” said Naicker.

All available resources have been mobilised to hunt down the suspects and bring them to book. It is unclear if any shots were fired or if anyone sustained injuries.

Police in Umbumbulu have registered a case of armed robbery.
