Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the businessman had gone to the bank to withdraw money.

“When he arrived at the gate of his business premises, he was allegedly accosted by three armed men. The suspects reportedly robbed the victim of a bag containing his belongings and a small amount of money. The bag containing the large sum of money, which the man had just withdrawn, was left in his vehicle,” said Netshiunda.

ET Rapid Response said that just after the incident, the ET Tactical Response Team immediately mobilised and circulated information to other members regarding the possible whereabouts of the suspects as they were travelling to Durban after committing the robbery. The police spotted their car at the corner of Broad Street and Victoria Embankment.

“Members of the Sydenham Police Station’s Trio Task Team located the suspects’ vehicle, and upon attempting to pull it over, the suspects immediately opened fire, causing damage to the police vehicle,” said ET Rapid Response in a statement.

A high-speed chase ensued, and the suspects crashed their vehicle.

“One suspect was arrested, and the victim’s belongings were recovered. Unfortunately, the remaining suspects managed to escape by fleeing towards a crowded area. All necessary role-players attended the scene, and investigations are ongoing to trace the outstanding suspects,” said the statement.

The man who was caught has appeared in court and has been remanded in custody until his next appearance.
