Police spokesperson Captain Carmen Rhynes said police officers from the eThekwini Economic Infrastructure Task Unit were patrolling along Bonito Road in Isipingo Rail when they noticed a white bakkie with three suspects reversing towards the rear of a house.

“The officers approached tactically and noticed a load of copper cables lying at the corner of the residential premises. Upon inspecting the rear of the bakkie, copper cables were found under tarpaulins. The suspects could not account for having the cables,” said Rhynes.

All three suspects, aged between 32 and 46, were arrested and charged with tampering with essential infrastructure and being in possession of suspected stolen property, as well as receiving stolen property.

eThekwini Police District Commissioner, Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, commended the arrest, saying the eThekwini Economic Infrastructure Task Team is committed to arresting such offenders and ensuring they are brought before a court of law to be prosecuted.

“Possession, purchasing and selling of stolen property is a serious offence, especially when it interferes with our infrastructure and the economy of our country,” said the commissioner.

The men will appear in court soon.
