Alice Louise Glenister (Piper) was born on April 13, 1937, and moved to Umbogintwini at an early age. She attended Amanzimtoti Primary School and Amanzimtoti High School. She began her career at AECI, where she worked until her retirement. Following retirement, Alice spent another 10 years working for the Amanzimtoti Child and Family Welfare Society.

She married Eric Glenister on March 31, 1962, and they shared 61 wonderful years before Eric passed away on October 1, 2023. From their love came two children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Alice was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, friend and great-grandmother. Though an introvert, she actively participated in activities that empowered women and fostered a sense of community in Amanzimtoti. She was a founding member of the Twini Park Evening Women’s Institute, which later became the Amanzimtoti Women’s Institute. She was also a member of the Night Owl Craft Club, Grass Roots, Cottage Patch, Tollgate Quilting Groups, Happy Hooker (crochet), Ladies’ Bible Studies, Icing Guild and Club 21.

She was skilled in various crafts, including pewter work, embroidery, baking and icing. Over the decades, her beautifully decorated wedding and Christmas cakes passed happily through many households. Alice was surrounded by women and the arts and crafts that she loved. In her gentle, quiet way, she provided a listening ear and support. She was a pillar of calm amid chaos. For the next generation of women, may Alice’s legacy inspire you to be fiercely independent and show you the power of quiet strength.
