According to a statement by the Community Crime Prevention Organisation Amanzimtoti (CCPO), the alleged house robbery occurred at around 13:10. The men entered the property by jumping over the fence and robbed its occupants of their valuables.

“The suspects arrived in a vehicle and entered the house. The occupants managed to call someone for assistance, and a police officer arrived first and managed to disable the suspect’s vehicle, forcing them to flee on foot,” it said.

As the suspects fled into bushes next to the N2 freeway, an officer from the Amanzimtoti Police Station, on his way home, noticed what was happening and requested assistance on the CCPO WhatsApp group.

“CCPO, ET Rapid Response, Blue Security – Durban, Fidelity ADT Amanzimtoti and the Police Metro K9 Units responded. Three suspects were arrested, and one was shot when he pulled out a firearm,” said the statement.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the men robbed the occupants of the house of their jewellery.

“The suspects were spotted by private security, and during the process of apprehension, one suspect reportedly fired shots, and in the shoot-out that ensued, he was shot and killed,” said Netshiunda.

The men appeared in court on May 30 and were remanded in custody until their next appearance.
