Ringball takes centre stage in Amanzimtoti

Ringball, traditionally called korfbal, is a family sport that the young and old can play.

THE South Coast Ringball Club, in collaboration with KZN Ringball Schools, held a very successful development day in Amanzimtoti on March 9.

The games were played at the Amanzimtoti High School’s netball court and saw players young and old participate. KZN Ringball president, Ockert van Schalkwyk, who was also playing, said ringball is a family sport that the young and old can play.

“The love of this sport is so great that we want to share this with everyone. Ringball is played across South Africa and was traditionally called korfbal but for international participation, the name has changed to ringball in 2007,” said Schalkwyk.

Although KwaZulu-Natal is one of the largest provinces, Schalkwyk said its player base is one of the smallest in the sport.

“We are hosting these development days across our province to develop ringball in KwaZulu-Natal to not only to become one of the largest provinces going to the South African championships but to also showcase the talent that we have in our province. Ringball not only helps to develop ball skills which could be beneficial for other sports, but it also to develop quick thinking and fast reaction,” he said.

He added that development days are aimed at everyone who does not know the sport and wants to try something different. He asked everyone to keep an eye out on the various ringball social media platforms, including www.kznringball.co.za, Facebook and Instagram for dates on future development days to participate in.

“You don’t need to have any experience as our coaches will be happy to teach you the game,” said Schalkwyk.

The KZN Ringball trials will be held in May on a date that will be announced between the various registered clubs in the province. The selected players will represent KZN at the SA National Championships in Pretoria.
