Councillor Beetge back in Exco

Ward 97 councillor Andrè Beetge is back in his seat as a member in the mayoral executive committee of eThekwini Municipality.

ANDRÉ Beetge, the Ward 97 councillor, is back in the mayoral executive committee (Exco) after the Democratic Alliance nominated him for the position again on March 12.

Beetge had been voted out of Exco on February 29 after ANC councillors raised a successful motion to remove him, citing his run-ins with the mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, during meetings as a reason. Beetge had also supported a motion raised in January to remove Kaunda from his position. In response, Beetge said he was humbled and appreciative of the concern and support expressed by the community.

“This extended beyond the ward borders, with support expressed from across the city, which included other political parties, not least from within a divided governing party. But it likewise revealed naive opportunists, those with political aspirations yet with a total lack of comprehension of the ever-changing scenarios of the political landscape. So to those who were genuinely worried, I extend my appreciation, and to those who thought they were jumping to an opportunity, much the same message – we are back,” he said.

He added that his sleeves were rolled up for a few more encounters with the mayor as the election day of May 29 nears.
