Illegal municipal strike continues

There is still no indication when the strike will end.

THE strike by eThekwini Municipality workers which started on February 27 has continued into the new week, and there is no indication when it may end.

The strike was deemed illegal by the municipality, and it has seen some damage being done to public property by the striking staffers. They are protesting in demand of higher salaries in line with those of employees of Gauteng metros. The strike has disrupted some municipal services, including waste collection.

Ward 97 councillor André Beetge said efforts to find out when the workers will go back to work have been fruitless. He asked residents not to improperly dispose of their waste.

“Please do not put out domestic refuse as it will not be collected today (March 4). Instead, deliver refuse to the open circus site along Civic Road next to the N2. Do not merely leave it outside, next to the road or somewhere in the bush,” he said.

At the time of publication, there was still no news on when the water supply would be restored to Athlone Park, Amanzimtoti Central and certain areas of Kingsburgh.

“Phones remain unanswered, and no personnel are at work. The same goes for water leaks, bursts, sewage outfalls or electricity outages. The entire municipality is still on strike,” he said.

He promised to provide more updates.
